Spain is a popular destination for European holiday makers. This has encouraged a large percentage of Europeans to purchase holiday villas, and apartments for rentals, and private use. The reasons for this are due to the exceptionally mild year round temperate climate, and also the relatively inexpensive property prices.
Spain is in the southwestern part of Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Spain is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the south and east. An exception to this is is a small land boundary with the British overseas territory of Gibralta. In the north, Spain borders with France, Andorra and the Bay of Biscay. To the northwest and the west of Spain is the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal.

Spanish territory includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the African coast, and two cities in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla, that border Morocco. Spanish territory covers an area of 504,030 kmē. Spain is second only to France in being the largest country in Western Europe and the European Union. From January 1, 2010, Spain will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Due to its location, the territory of Spain has been the subject of many outside influences. However, the country has been important in the influence of other regions, notably during the Modern Era, when it became a global empire that gave us over 400 million Spanish speakers. The Spanish language is the second most widely used language.
