Poland is located in the centre of Europe. To the west is Germany, Slovakia and Czech Republic to the south, to the east is Lithuania, Belarus and the Ukraine, the Baltic sea to the north.

Poland covers an area of 312,679 km2, with a population of 38 million plus, Poland is placed 34th most populated country in the world.

Poland became an independent country after World War I in 1918. However, in World War II, it was invaded by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Six million Polish people were killed during World War II and many years later it was known as the People's Republic of Poland, part of the eastern Block under Soviet rule.

In 1989 Poland managed to free itself from communist rule and became the "Third Polish Republic". Now a member of Nato, United nations, WTO and the European Union.

By the start of the 1990s Poland had began to create itself a market economy. There were highs and lows with it's economy as it struggled to set itself free from communism, but by 1995 it was booming.

Leaving behind it's past Poland has made huge strides forward not only with it's economy, but also with human rights, freedom of speech, joining NATO and the European Union in 2004.

Krakow is one of the oldest and second largest cities in Poland. Krakow is a World Heritage site. It is located by the Vistula River and it dates back to the 7th century.
Krakow is known for its culture and is also an economic centre for Poland.
Originally Krakow was the capital of Poland from 1038 to 1596, but now it is known as the capital of Lesser Poland Voivodeship.
