Jamaica is an island nation of the Greater Antilles. Being 234 kilometres in length and 80 kilometres in width in places, a total area of 11,100 km2. Jamaica is located in the Caribbean Sea. Jamaicas original inhabitants are the Arawakan-speaking Taíno people. They called the island Xaymaca, meaning the "Land of Wood and Water", or the "Land of Springs".
Jamaica at one time belonged to Spain, however in 1655 it bcame an English Colony.
Having a population of 2.8 million people, it makes it the third most populous anglophone country in the Americas, after the United States and Canada. To date it is still a Commonwealth country. The Capital is Kingston, this is also the largest city in Jamaica.
Jamaica is the fourth largest country and third largest island in the Caribbean.The Blue Mountains are located inland and it is surrounded by a thin coastal plain. The majority of towns and cities are situated along the coast.The largest towns and cities are the capital Kingston, Portmore, Spanish Town, Mandeville, Ocho Ríos, Port Antonio, Negril, and Montego Bay. The largest natural harbour in the world is Kingston Harbour.
Many tourist attractions are found across the country, Dunn's River Falls in St. Ann, YS Falls in St. Elizabeth, the Blue Lagoon in Portland, and Port Royal. Port Royal was the location of an earthquake.
Jamaica has a tropical climate. Hot and humid. Areas such as the Liguanea Plain and the Pedro Plains are fairly dry. Jamaica sits in the hurricane belt of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to this, the island sometimes has a large amount of storm damage. Hurricanes Charlie and Gilbert arrived in Jamaica in 1951 and 1988. There was major damage and alot of deaths.
